So what is HomeX?

HOME X uses the gaming engine Unity to create a three-dimensional, virtual world. A live digital performance mixing theatre, music, gaming and VR technology. HOME X explores themes of roots and belonging, destruction and renewal. Originally commissioned by British Council Hong Kong for the SPARK Festival 2021.

In separate studios in Hong Kong and the UK depth-sensing cameras capture 3D video of the performers and “holoport” – that is, insert – that video into the HOME X world in real time. The performers see and immerse themselves in the digital environment using virtual reality headsets, so although they are not in the same place physically, they see themselves and each other together inside the 3D game world.

HOME X connects the London and Hong Kong performers in real time, which means the artists can act, dance and interact with both their digital selves and the audience avatars. The audience also enter the same world as avatars.

This live/digital hybrid production combines theatre, music, dance, gaming and virtual reality (VR) technology to create an immersive and interactive experience exploring notions of belonging and roots, destruction and renewal. We are currently developing HOME X as a live/digital hybrid production which will be launched early 2023.

What did I contribute to this project?

In this project, I focus on UI development, creating the logic of the UI interface and implementing them to ensure it’s ready to use for the users, from the start menu to in-game UI. The interactive UI will adapt based on a different stage of the game. The behaviour of the player will have an impact on the UI as well since the game is multiplayer. The UI will receive data from the server and display it differently at different stages. The API for the server connection and logic that is used in is project is a unity plugin called MIRROR.
